Celtic Will Rest Stars In Vienna

Celtic will field an under strength side in Thursday’s final Europa League group tie against Rapid Vienna.

Neither side can reach the next stage of the tournament and assistant manager Mark Venus confirmed that a number of fringe players will get a chance.

Acknowledging that the match is “dead”, Venus said: “We’ll use the game to give players a bit of European experience.

“I think you may see a few a few changes, which will be beneficial to some of the younger boys.”

Celtic, who trail Rangers by one point in the Scottish Premier League, face a trip to Hearts on Sunday.

And, following Saturday’ s win at Motherwell, manager Tony Mowbray said: “Next Sunday (against Hearts) is my main focus, not Thursday.”

Venus sees sense in rotating the squad, with Paul Caddis, Pat McCourt, Niall McGinn, Chris Killen, Willo Flood and Koki Mizuno among those likely to be given a chance to catch the manager’s eye.

“You can’t keep playing the same players all of the time,” added the assistant boss.

“You’ve got to use some games to give some boys experience and if there’s nothing on the game, there’s no pressure.

“The playing style won’t change, everyone at the club knows the way we play.”
